Recipe: How to make manti (in English)
Ingredients
- 400 g flour
- 1 egg
- 160 ml warm water (about)
- 1 tsp salt (for dough)
- 500 g minced meat (lamb or beef)
- 2 large onions, finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp salt (for filling) + pepper and cumin to taste
- 2–3 tbsp vegetable oil or melted butter
- Optional: a little yogurt or sour cream to serve
Steps (simple English instructions)
- Put the flour and 1 teaspoon of salt into a large bowl.
- Make a well in the middle, add the egg and some warm water. Mix and knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic (about 8–10 minutes).
- Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- While the dough rests, prepare the filling: mix minced meat, chopped onions, 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper and cumin. Add 1–2 tablespoons of water or oil so the filling is juicy.
- Divide the dough into 2–3 pieces. Roll each piece thinly on a floured surface (about 2 mm thick).
- Cut the rolled dough into squares (about 7×7 cm). Put about 1 teaspoon of filling in the centre of each square.
- Fold the corners of the square to the centre and press to close. You can make a neat little parcel or a small cone — both are correct.
- Place the manti in a steamer or in a special manti pot. Do not put them too close together.
- Steam the manti for 30–40 minutes until the dough is cooked and the meat is tender.
- Serve hot with melted butter, yogurt or sour cream. Enjoy!
Teacher’s notes — useful words and grammar (explanations in Russian)
- Knead — месить тесто. Глагол используется в повелительном наклонении: "Knead the dough." Это инструкция для ученика/повара.
- Let it rest — дать постоять. Строение: let + object + base verb (let the dough rest).
- Roll — раскатать: "Roll the dough thin."
- Cut — нарезать: "Cut the rolled dough into squares."
- Put — положить: "Put the filling in the centre."
- Fold — сложить (углы): "Fold the corners."
- Steam — готовить на пару: "Steam the manti for 30–40 minutes."
- Повелительное наклонение в рецептах — обычно короткие глаголы без «you»: "Mix", "Knead", "Steam".
If you want, I can give a shorter version as a worksheet for class or translate individual steps back into Russian. Which do you prefer?
